I am having one heck of a time finding new Linux System Administrators for current position openings I have configuring large research computing systems. Most general postings, ACM chapters, and the like have a wealth of WinDoze experts and DBAs but few Linux Sys Admins (even at the entry level....). Is there a serious shortage in Northern IN? I know plenty of folks in Northern IN looking for jobs in this recession, I am about to start recommending they enroll in a couple of OS/Sys Admin classes and focus on Linux.

I believe most people are deluded into thinking that being a Windows Admin is the only way to make any money in the field. There was a time when I was pursuing a MCSA cert in Server 2003, for just that reason. I am a MCP, something I will probably never use in my life. I think most of us Linux users are self taught, and not driven by money, but by the love of the craft. As my own kind of System Admin I will only run Linux, because of usability, stability, and security. I do not have the certs but I can Administrate Windows and Linux.

I am new to this group and don't know much about it, but looking in a place like this is a great idea. And if you are looking for a Linux Admin perhaps you should look for someone who is knowledgeable, even if they are not certified. Its not difficult to talk with someone for 5 or 10 minutes about Linux and know if they know you know. :)

Anyhow good luck on your manhunt, or womanhunt as it were. I do some consultation work, so if you need a contractor on a limited basis hit me up.
