Just reticently I was at the store getting my daughters school supplies, when the store had 512MB thumb drives for $4.99. I bought one and installed Puppy Linux 4.2 on the drive and booted my AMD +3300 computer into Puppy Linux. Boy, this version of Linux on the usb zip drive is really fast. It is a slaxware version of Linux that is 100MB or so. I was pleased at how fast she booted up and shutdown.
Installing software is done using PET files and you can convert some non pet packages to also work.

I downloaded the ISO and burned it to a cd, I then booted into a live CD distro of Puppy Linux, using the installer on the desktop I formated and installed onto the USB Drive, it was painless about 4 minutes and I had a new version of Linux that I had not used.
This is nice because I use it on my wifes computer not messing up her Windows, I am able to use and save Linux to a removable drive.
It seems like a nice alternative to the main group Linux

I have recently needed to do something simlar for a SUSE workstation deployment. The machines did not have a CD or DVD drive in them and didn't have enough time to really setup a PXE deployment option. (The network would have needed some work). Anyway...I was able to take the mini-iso from Novell and make a bootable USB disk that loaded the base boot image and allowed me to do a network based install of SLED 10 to the machines. I did this on a 128MB thumb drive.
This can work with OpenSuse also.

I tried using the Ubuntu USB tool for making a boot disk on one of my USB thumb drives, but I would get an error when starting it off any other machines.

I have tried it with Fedora but I also had some errors. Puppy Linux is a small distro that real flies on that thumb drive.

I haven't tried it with Ubuntu but that might be neat to try,
thats good that you where able to use the usb to set up a computer to finish the install.

I have had live CD work in one computer and not in another so I could see a usb doing the same, you might check your bios setting on the different computers and see if that will correct your issue
