I have recently needed to do something simlar for a SUSE workstation deployment. The machines did not have a CD or DVD drive in them and didn't have enough time to really setup a PXE deployment option. (The network would have needed some work). Anyway...I was able to take the mini-iso from Novell and make a bootable USB disk that loaded the base boot image and allowed me to do a network based install of SLED 10 to the machines. I did this on a 128MB thumb drive.
This can work with OpenSuse also. http://tinyurl.com/ngnw9c |

I tried using the Ubuntu USB tool for making a boot disk on one of my USB thumb drives, but I would get an error when starting it off any other machines.

I have tried it with Fedora but I also had some errors. Puppy Linux is a small distro that real flies on that thumb drive.
I haven't tried it with Ubuntu but that might be neat to try, thats good that you where able to use the usb to set up a computer to finish the install. I have had live CD work in one computer and not in another so I could see a usb doing the same, you might check your bios setting on the different computers and see if that will correct your issue |
